Chromecast, What are your thoughts?

So I purchased a chrome cast a while back, Its a first generation one but it works really well IMO. Althought the screensharing bit is a bit bleh it is goot for youtube and netflix shows and I really enjoy it.

So if I use ChromeCast what do you guys use for streaming etc?
And does anyone know of a way to decently projectHDMI over some sort of wireless link?

I use OpenELEC/XBMC/KODI on a small form factor PC that has a HDMI, and it work great. I can’t talk about the wifi but i suppose that it would work great with a good wifi nic.
Raspberry pi and the other variant seem to run well too even if i’ve never had the chance to test it. I’ll buy one, one day.

I’ve never used one, don’t really have any thoughts…

I’m loving Chromecast, we mainly use it on our TV in the bedroom. Some minor tweaks and Kodi will run through it. Absolutely no complaints here. If you use iOS well your limited at what it can do.

Android can screen/audio cast, Apple cannot from what I’ve seen.

Kodi? I have never heard of that before, It looks like a Plex alternative? Might have to try it out.

Kodi is a Open Source Home Theater Software which runs on Linux, Android, and Windows. I think it can be an alternative to Plex but Kodi is a standalone program.

Kodi used to be called XBMC (Xbox Media Center). I used to use it on my modded Xbox years ago. It will run on iOS but jailbreaking is required.

5 Million people have it on PlayStore :slightly_smiling:

Yup so i have just purchased the new Chrome Cast. I was looking at the Apple TV however it wouldn’t be as compatible with Windows Computers. So far its been really good for watching Netflix, Youtube Just being able to fire up the Youtube and or Netflix app on my iPhone then stream to the chrome cast it’s just magic. Saves having a HDMI cable running across the room to a PC or Laptop.

Did you see that the raspberry pi 3 launch? last week? i purchased one
It a little more pricy then the chromecast with all the accessory but you can do mush more with it

I would only use the raspberry pi 3 for small server applications not as a media centre. Just want it to work.

I feel like I would get more use out of a Pi… Even as a media center, since most media servers do the heavy lifting (transcoding).

I use a Chromecast almost everyday, and i love it. Screen sharing is alot better on the new revision and well i guess Lollipop has better support for it… And on the PI3 thing, I only just bought an RPI 2 xD I also love the new logo!

Same! Just got mine yesterday, I was also glad to see a headless Raspbian image, “Raspbian Jessie Lite” https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

Does your Chromecast also wake the TV?

No because I’m powering the chrome cast from the TV. I don’t think the USB ports are powered when the TV is in standby.

Really glad too, but i haven’t had time to play with it
